Peer Education
CONNECTING TRUST’S ENDEAVOUR TO EMOTIONALLY SUPPOR STUDENTS, TEACHERS & PARENTS
As children, we find it easier to confide in our friends which is why, Connecting Trust felt the need to develop an ecosystem of support for students. The program is aimed at creating, maintaining and strengthening the peer support that is present in classrooms.
The target population for the Peer Education Program is adolescents and the idea is to create caring communities in educational settings by raising awareness about emotional distress and self-harm in a peer group. In this 1-year-long program, volunteers facilitate the process of sensitization of participants from the classroom.
Through the Peer Education Program, issues related to emotional awareness, enhancement of their listening skills, self-care and life-skills are explored and imparted. The participants who attend the year-long program, also known as ‘peer educators’ then become catalysts for spreading this awareness and empowering their classmates and larger social circles.
The Peer Education Program (PEP) equips students to primarily check for distress in themselves and develop their own coping strategies. Subsequently identify distress and respond to distress in their classmates, by involving relevant stakeholders such as counselors, parents and teachers.
The outcomes of this program generally involve increased knowledge of self-harm warning signs, skills to respond to peers in distress, empathy and active listening skills, increased communication and/or presentation skills, non-judgmental thinking about others, increased self-care, and an awareness of when to protect their own well-being.
